How the subconscious shapes reality

There’s a powerful sentence from last week by Charles Haanel that deserves more than a passing glance:

“Someone may ask: ‘How can the subconscious change conditions?’ The reply is, because the subconscious is a part of the Universal Mind and a part must be the same in kind and quality as the whole; the only difference is one of degree.”

At first, this might sound vague or mystical… but stay with it because this idea gets right to the heart of how real change happens.

What does that actually mean? How does the subconscious change your life?

Most people consider the subconscious like mental storage: memories, habits, maybe some childhood wounds collecting dust. But in the New Thought tradition, it’s not just storage. It’s creative power.

The subconscious isn’t just tagging along, it’s driving the car. It filters your reality, shapes your beliefs, and, most importantly, it connects you to something bigger than yourself.

Haanel calls this bigger thing the Universal Mind, which is a kind of underlying intelligence that runs through everything. And here’s the key point: your subconscious is part of that. It’s made of the same “stuff.” It’s not separate from that creative force. It is that force, in you.

In other words, the power isn’t out there, it’s in you.

When Haanel says “a part must be the same in kind and quality as the whole” he means that what’s true of the whole Universe is also true of you, not in size, but in essence.

So when you impress an idea onto your subconscious you’re not just “thinking positively.”, you’re planting a seed in the same soil from which real-world conditions grow.

The creative power that formed galaxies is the same power shaping your inner life. The only difference is scale. The drop contains the pattern of the ocean. You’re working with the same laws, just on a human scale.

Why does this matters?

This isn’t just esoteric or metaphysical theory… it’s practical.

If you believe you’re stuck or powerless, your subconscious will reinforce that story.

If you believe you’re capable and connected to something greater, your subconscious will start aligning your life with that belief.

That’s not wishful thinking or magic, that’s how deep systems work: your inner world sets the tone for your outer one.

And that’s why people who consistently change their inner world start to see shifts in their outer one.

You don’t have to “control” the Universe. You just have to work with your deeper mind because it’s already linked to the Universe. It speaks the same language.

So the real question isn’t:
“Can my subconscious change conditions?”

The real question is:
“What conditions am I asking it to create?”
