how we trick ourselves without noticing

We all like to think we’re honest with ourselves. But inside each of us lives the greatest storyteller in the world: the mind.

That inner voice, the constant chatter in our heads, is rarely truthful. We tell ourselves stories that are far from what we really feel.

Imagine someone who often says, “I don’t care what people think of me.” He says it confidently… maybe even with pride. But he spends hours curating his social media, and when he’s alone, he replays every conversation, wondering if he sounded stupid or was judged. His mind has created a story of indifference, but underneath, he’s desperate for approval.

That’s how the mind protects the ego. It builds a lie that feels noble, hiding the smaller truth that he does care… deeply.

We all do this in some way: we say we’re over someone when their absence still hurts; we say we’re fine when we’re falling apart.

The mind edits the truth, adding polish and trimming the pain, until even we believe the version it creates.

Why do we do it?

For the same reasons we lie to others: to be accepted, to survive, to avoid pain or punishment. The person who insists he doesn’t care probably has a deep need to be accepted, wrapped in an armor of indifference. It looks like confidence, but it’s fear in disguise, fear of rejection and of being truly seen.

So he keeps up the story, pretending not to care, when in fact he cares more than he admits. The lie isn’t exactly cruel, instead it protects him from the sting of not feeling enough.

That’s the trick of the mind. It doesn’t just lie to others; it lies to us first, so we can live with ourselves more easily.

One way to escape this pattern is to connect honestly with your own energy.

Your energy doesn’t lie… it won’t let you hide behind clever words or a polished image.

When you tune into it (with those quiet signals underneath your thoughts) it reveals what’s real. You can’t fake calm when you’re angry, or pretend you’ve moved on when your body still tightens at a memory.

Energy speaks through tension, fatigue, excitement, or restlessness. It’s the body’s language of truth.

You can fool your mind, but not your energy.

When you start to listen to that deeper current, the stories lose their power. The armor softens. And what remains is simple and real: you, without the disguise.

If you want to explore this kind of inner connection in practice, the Vitality and Energy Training course offers tools to help you listen to your body and understand your own energy better.
