We often hear the phrase, “Just be yourself.” But what does that really mean?
Usually, it’s said to discourage the urge to impress others or pretend to be someone we’re not.
This “advice” applies to situations like dates, job interviews, or public speaking. In such moments, we might try to wear a mask — a mask of being the perfect partner, the ideal employee, or an upstanding individual — to win approval.
However, deep down, we know these masks don’t represent who we truly are, and this disconnect creates anxiety. That tension stems from an internal conflict: our energy resists the facade our mind is trying to construct.
So, when someone tells us to “just be yourself,” it’s meant to ease that conflict and reduce anxiety. Unfortunately, this advice often falls flat because the underlying need to impress remains.
But what does it truly mean to “be yourself”?
The real issue is that most of us don’t fully know who we are. We often identify ourselves with external things — our personality, hobbies, jobs, or desires — but these are ever-changing. Over the course of our lives, our interests shift, our careers evolve, and even our personalities transform.
Being true to yourself requires knowing who you are beneath the surface — beyond your roles and activities. It means understanding your energy and how it flows within you. This energy helps you connect with the essence of who you truly are: the good, the bad, and the uncomfortable truths. It’s about seeing yourself without the filters, excuses, or rationalizations that cloud your mind and internal dialogue.
This is the radical honesty we need to cultivate toward ourselves. It’s not about creating a fairy tale or a hero’s narrative but embracing the raw, unvarnished truth that only your energy can reveal.
