Most of what you feel is not you

Many people talk about being themselves, or being true to themselves. We talk about it a lot here too, because it matters since it is a core part of being magnetic.

But there is a misunderstanding that needs clearing up.

Being yourself does not mean obeying every impulse that pops up. In other words, a craving is not a calling: if you feel like eating junk food, that does not mean junk food is an expression of your deepest self.

To be perfectly clear: You are not being yourself when you are eating junk food or scrolling through social media. That is not your Will in action, that is simply conditioning. When this happens, your Will is not really steering. There is no character and no Will. There is only a reflex doing what you were trained to do. Boredom, fatigue, loneliness and low-grade restlessness ring the bell and the body responds.

We all carry impulses that are not good for us and not connected to what we mean when we say “my true self.” They come from habit, repetition, and past reward, as opposed to the depth of your Will.

If I had to guess, I would say most of our daily impulses fall into this category. Probably the vast majority… and you can easily see this for yourself: pay attention during a normal day and notice what pushes you into action. Not the story you tell yourself afterward, but the first internal nudge.

You will usually find it is shallow, automatic, and familiar.

You’ll notice how it’s not really a deep calling from within, but instead something that was conditioned early on.

Your real self, the one with values, standards, and memory, does not hunger for neon snacks or endless arguments on a screen. It wants substance, rhythm and most importantly… meaning. It even wants boredom now and then. It wants effort that leads somewhere.

The problem is that it speaks softly and gently while dopamine shouts louder.

The only reliable way to tell the difference is practice awareness. Learning your impulses so well that you can spot them instantly and say “this is conditioning”, “this is habit”, “this is the body running an old program”. And then, this other thing, this quieter pull, “this is something else entirely”.

They can feel similar at first, that is why awareness matters. Real awareness, not thinking about feelings but sensing them directly. Going into the body and into the signal beneath the noise.

That depth of attention is rare today… but it is learnable. And once you have it, being yourself stops being a slogan and starts being a discipline. This is what we train in the course “Advanced Energy Science”.
