taking back control is the real inner power

Inner power is, at its core, the ability to reclaim control over yourself. When you lose control, you also lose power, and the most obvious examples of this are addictions.

Think of alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, or gambling.

Each time you become dependent on them, they are no longer serving you: you are serving them. It is as if the substance or activity is holding the reins, steering your actions, thoughts, and moods.

Listen to the language that slips into your mind: “I need a drink” “I must smoke now”. In those moments, you are not in charge of your life… you are handing your authority over to the craving.

If you listen carefully and with honesty, you can feel the surrender in those words.

But here’s the truth: these are only the addictions that are easy to name. There are others, quieter and more subtle, that society doesn’t usually call addictions but that still rob you of your freedom: procrastination, seeking approval, craving for attention, obsession with controlling every detail… each of these is a form of dependency. And each time you allow them to dictate your behavior, you trade away a piece of your inner power.

Take procrastination as an example. You set out to do something meaningful like a project, a piece of work, a task that could move your life forward. Yet instead of doing it, you stall or scroll or distract yourself, postponing the task.

At the end of the day, you are left with nothing but regret and frustration. That day, you lost control… not to a substance, but to the addiction of avoidance. And if this pattern repeats, so too does the erosion of your inner power.

Inner power means the ability to choose freely instead of being pushed around by cravings or habits. It is acting because you decide, not because you feel forced. It is staying the authority in your own life, not handing it over to impulses or to other people.

When you hold that authority, when you preserve that freedom of choice… that is inner power.
