The non-magnetic man

Here’s an interesting quote by Hector Durville:

“The non-magnetic man irritates you. If you are hard to deal with, he worsens your harshness and ill-temper; if you are in low spirits, he darkens your horizons even more; if you feel unhappy, his presence seems to weigh upon you.

“Yes, he is a burden, and you must endure him. He asks for your sympathy; says no one understands him; complains about his fate, the weather, or some random person. He is discontented, a talker.

“He shares his secrets with you; wants you to partake in his sorrows.

“He is impulsive and lacks discretion, devoid of calm, good sense, measure, and genuine interest.

“You must flatter him and let him go. You can do this easily: pander to his selfishness; speak of his worth, rid yourself of him and… think of him no more.

“Once that is done, you will feel light and happy after he leaves.

“His presence weighed on you horribly because you didn’t know how to shield yourself from his influence.

“If you had known, you could have not only avoided the loss of magnetism, but even drawn something from his weakness — if you had so desired.

“Why then is he devoid of attractive qualities?

“The reason is quite simple. He is negative; he depends on others, and he always has complaints to make.”
