In the previous email we looked at how what you attract into your life is often a reflection of your own energetic state rather than pure chance, and that naturally raises a practical question: how do you actually tell the difference between something that is just bad luck and something that is a genuine pattern worth examining?
This distinction matters because treating a one-off circumstance as a deep pattern leads you into unnecessary self-examination and, sometimes, unwarranted self-blame. But treating a genuine pattern as bad luck keeps you stuck, repeating the same outcome indefinitely while attributing it to chance.
Here are a few practical ways to tell the difference.
Look at frequency across different contexts: a single failed business might genuinely be bad luck, market timing, or circumstances outside your control. Three businesses failing in a strikingly similar way, with similar mistakes, across different industries and different partners, is no longer circumstantial.
The common factor across varying situations is you, and that consistency is the signature of a pattern.
If a tsunami destroyed your beach bar, it’s probably not a deep pattern inside of you. This requires resiliency and pushing forward. But if you have had three businesses failing due to wrong business partners, probably that’s something to look at.
Look at the specific shape of what repeats: genuine bad luck tends to be varied in its form while a pattern tends to have a particular shape that recurs almost exactly, like the same kind of partner showing up with different faces, the same kind of betrayal from people who otherwise seem nothing alike, the same dynamic playing out in friendships, work, and family.
When the shape of the difficulty is oddly specific and keeps recurring, that specificity is information.
Notice your internal state in the lead up to the situation… genuine bad luck often arrives without much internal signal beforehand. A pattern usually has a felt quality before it unfolds, a familiar contraction, a particular kind of anxiety, an old and recognizable energy that shows up right before the same kind of outcome occurs.
If you can feel something familiar building before the difficulty arrives, that familiarity points toward pattern rather than chance.
Consider whether the same lesson keeps repeating… bad luck does not usually come with a lesson attached while a pattern almost always does, and if you find yourself learning, intellectually, the same insight over and over without the actual behavior or outcome changing, that is a clear sign the pattern is operating below the level where insight alone can reach it.
This distinction matters a good deal because the response is different in each case: bad luck calls for resilience and moving forward while a genuine pattern calls for going inward, locating the energetic structure generating it, and doing the work to actually shift it.
Confusing the two keeps you working on the wrong problem, and that is often the real reason a difficult situation refuses to change no matter how hard you try to fix it from the outside.
