In the last email, I wrote about the difference between choosing not to do something and being unable to do it. Choice means you keep your power and Will, while inability comes from an inner block that stops you from acting, even when you want to. The real trap is when we cover up that inability with excuses, telling ourselves we are making a decision when in fact we are stuck.
Seeing this difference clearly is the first step toward freeing ourselves, and it becomes surprisingly easy once you know what to notice (easy but not always pleasant, which is an important distinction).
The difference shows up in your Will, in your own sense of power. When you decide not to do something freely, you feel steady and at peace. When you stop yourself because of an inner block, your Will makes itself known. You feel weaker, smaller, as if some of your energy has been drained.
No matter how many excuses or rationalizations you create, your body and energy feel the loss. The mask may fool others, but it cannot fool you or your energy.
Imagine this. You are invited to share your ideas in front of a group. Deep down, you want to do it. You feel the spark, the urge to step forward. Then anxiety rises, and instead of facing it, you pull back. You tell yourself, “I’m too busy” or “It’s not really important”.
Outwardly it sounds reasonable, but inside, you feel the sting.
The truth is clear: you didn’t choose to step aside… fear pushed you back. Afterwards, you don’t feel relief but instead you feel emptier, as if a part of you wanted growth and you denied it.
This feeling is how you know the difference, not through excuses or explanations, but by sensing the gain or loss of power inside yourself.
When you act from choice, even in small ways, you feel a quiet strength… a lightness that comes from being aligned with your own Will.
When you hold back because of an internal block, no reasoning can hide the drain… the sinking sense that part of you has been denied.
This internal signal, the feeling of being empowered or diminished, is your most honest guide. It cannot be faked, ignored, or reasoned away.
Learning to notice it means learning to listen to yourself, to distinguish true willful choice from hidden paralysis, and ultimately, to reclaim the freedom fear has tried to steal.
For anyone ready to explore this more deeply, Will Mastery offers exercises to recognize these blocks, understand how they show up, and practice ways to move through them.
