We often think of blocks as random contractions and tensions in our bodies. We might even assume they are the same for everyone.
While there are certain common experiences, the blocks and challenges we face are unique to each of us. Even more personal is the way we deal with them.
A block is a defense mechanism that was unconsciously set in place at a particular moment in your life to protect you from a perceived threat. I say perceived threat because, more often than not, they were not threats at all, but you perceived them as such (though sometimes they were actual threats!).
Because of this, your body started using this defense mechanism each time something remotely similar happened. That’s why you may feel similar blocks in different situations you encounter.
For example, maybe you started to contract your solar plexus in an attempt to protect yourself from your father’s anger when you were a child. Now, this same contraction happens each time you come across an authority figure, like your boss or a school teacher.
The way you choose to behave when this block is activated may differ. Maybe you feel the need to hide, or maybe you feel the need to confront or provoke. Either way, you’ll have your own behavior based on this defense mechanism.
This is not a conscious behavior; it’s simply a reaction. It doesn’t come from your Will. It’s your habitual, unconscious reaction to the activation of that defense mechanism.
In the unblocking work, you need to get to know these blocks intimately — not only where and what they are, but also what reaction they elicit in you. Only then can you start to stop reacting and begin acting from your true Will.
This is the work we do in the course:
