The territory you stopped visiting

The way you meet with difficulty is one of the most accurate indicators of where your energetic development actually stands. Obstacles and difficulty have a way of cutting through everything you have built on the surface and showing you what is underneath.

Most people relate to difficulty in one of two ways: either they collapse under it, allowing the obstacle to confirm whatever limiting belief is already running in the background, or they avoid it, routing around anything that might expose a weakness, a block, or a gap in their development.

Both responses are understandable but neither of them builds anything.

Collapsing under difficulty reinforces the block and contraction since each time an obstacle arrives and your energy closes down around it, the pattern of closing down gets a little more established.

The body learns that difficulty means contraction, and over time that becomes the default response, not just to major obstacles but to anything that introduces uncertainty or pressure.

The contracted presence this produces is felt by everyone around you, especially in high-stakes situations where magnetism matters most.

Avoiding difficulty produces a different problem… on the surface it looks more functional, you are still moving, still engaging and still getting things done. But the energy has a specific quality of narrowness to it, operating only within territory it already knows is safe, and that limitation shows up as a ceiling on your development.

You can only develop the strength you are willing to encounter the resistance for.

But here is the part that often tends to go unexamined… the most significant obstacles for most people are not the ones they collapse under or consciously avoid. Instead, they are the ones they never register as obstacles at all.

In other words, the situations, interactions, and internal states they have been routing around for so long that the avoidance has become invisible, absorbed into the background of daily life as simply the way things are.

These are the areas where no resistance is felt simply because the territory has been so thoroughly avoided that the block is never encountered.

A straightforward example is someone who has not approached a person he finds attractive in years or even maybe decades. He does not feel anxious about it anymore. He does not feel the contraction, the hesitation, the internal resistance.

And he might interpret that absence of feeling as progress, as having moved past it somehow… but the absence of resistance is not because the block cleared. It is because he stopped going anywhere near the situation that would trigger it… the block is intact, it simply never gets activated because the territory around it has been completely abandoned.

The moment he actually tries to approach, everything that was always there comes back immediately, often more intensely than he expected, because it has been sitting undisturbed for a long time.

Using difficulty, meeting what arises with open energy rather than contraction or avoidance, is what builds magnetism. And the first step is becoming honest about what you have quietly stopped counting as difficulty at all.
