We are the Result of Our Thoughts

William Walker Atkinson wrote:

“All that we are or ever will be is the result of what has been thought”

Our thoughts – which include our mental states – construct our identity and what we are.

If you change the mental states that you usually have, you change what you are.

That is the “mantra” that surrounds all the New Thought philosophy. All those authors like William Atkinson, Ernest Holmes, Shaftesbury, among many others are talking about this basic fact.

When you read this kind of sentence in any New Thought book you may think they are referring only to the content of your thoughts. Your inner voice, what you say inside your mind.

But – as important as the inner voice is – that’s not the end of the story.

The energy behind a thought – or what we call of mental state – is as important, if not more than the actual content.

Needless to say that if you keep saying negative thoughts to yourself, your overall state will be negative. But if you keep repeating positive thoughts with a negative type of energy, your overall state will still be negative.

In other words, it’s not enough to say:

“I’m getting better and better everyday” – while feeling like crap.

As you might expect, it won’t be very fruitful for you.

The change of the mental state – the energy behind that thought – is the real important part.
The mental state includes the Will as well as your own energy. It’s not just a change in content.

When you change this content AND energy, then TRUE change in yourself happen since your whole being simply feels different in reaction to this new (and different) thought.

As always, this is a conscious change process. Something where you create an intention and actually do it. This is especially important to do when negativity or any negative state is setting in. This is where you need your best effort in changing your thoughts and mental states.

And before you ask, yes, this is hard. After all you are changing a very ingrained conditioning you had to think a specific thought and feel a specific state.

But once you achieve it and you break this though/state conditioning, then your energy changes on a permanent way.
