Working with our impulses

Not all the desires and impulses we experience are things to avoid or, even worse, repress.

We might label our desires as “bad” or view our impulses as something to be avoided because society disapproves of them, or we consider them morally wrong. But yet, here they are.

And you’ll continue to feel them. Whether it’s a sexual impulse, an aggressive urge, a desire for control, or a deep fear, these impulses don’t just go away.

Sometimes, these impulses have led to negative outcomes because we didn’t know how to handle them. Maybe you gave in and faced the consequences, or perhaps you repressed them and faced a different set of consequences.

However, this isn’t the best way to approach our desires and impulses, no matter what they are.

Instead, think of these impulses like a roommate you need to coexist with. Sometimes you have to compromise, sometimes you need to set boundaries, and other times you need to be patient and forgiving.

You must make decisions moment by moment.

What you can’t do is ignore your roommate or hide in your room to avoid him.

That approach will only lead to serious problems. Expect chaos and destruction in your house if you do.

The most crucial step is acknowledging these impulses and desires, and learning how to live with them because they are a part of you.

This is often the most underestimated and challenging part of the process, as it requires a deep awareness of your body and energy. It’s not enough to simply “think” your way through it. No — you need to be present in your body, noticing your energy and how it connects to your impulses and desires.

This isn’t a mental process; it’s an energetic one.
