You are already making a choice

Here’s a very thought provoking quote from the father of psychology, William James:

“When you have to make a choice and don’t make it, that is in itself a choice”

We all had though decisions to make at one point or another in life. Maybe you have one to do at this moment.

One that you really don’t know what to do or how to decide. Maybe it’s in your professional life. A though business decision. Or maybe it’s in your personal life. A relationships question.

Whatever that is, it’s a decision that you don’t know what to do.

A common defense against this type of hard decision is simply to not decide, by delaying… as if by not deciding you are keeping everything open and not eliminating anything.

That’s correct to a certain degree, but what William James tell us is that in itself is already a decision.

And it has two relevant aspects to it:

You are deciding to maintain the status quo, your current situation and allow someone else (or time) to take the decision for you.

First, you are keeping everything open UNTIL someone else – or life – decides for you. So you are giving away your power to decide what you want to do with your life.

This, as you can imagine, it’s not the best use of your Will and inner power. It’s like a leak in a bucket. Something you are giving away control.

While if you take control and actually choose something, you are owning your life and affirming your Will. Which is obviously more relevant for inner power and overall magnetism.

Secondly, if your current situation is something you are happy with, and want to preserve in time and really don’t care one way or another, then all may be good. If not, then you have an issue.

By not deciding, you are in fact deciding, whether you like it or not.

By postponing your decision, you are maintaining your current situation with all its good and bad aspects.

The problem is when this is indefinitely postponed in time. It’s very easy to fool ourselves into thinking that is what we really want. But if it were, then you would have decided already.

This type of situation – with two (or more) hard choices, that you can’t decide – can be serious leak not just in your own inner power, but also in your overall mental health.

It can be quite problematic for your well being if you are constantly divided – particularly if you don’t realize that in itself is already a decision – albeit not a very good one.

At certain moment, you have to make a choice. You have to own whatever life situation you are placed yourself in. That’s an important aspect of inner power.
