Your everyday life is a practice

In our last email, we discussed the importance of consciously choosing your actions to develop your willpower and attain freedom.

This seemingly small practice compels you to take responsibility and strengthens your will.

Your will isn’t built through exercises alone. While exercises can raise awareness of certain aspects, genuine progress happens in your everyday life.

Yes, the true work is done during those boring, mundane tasks we all have to do. If you ever feel like your life lacks excitement or is too repetitive, that’s fine. You don’t need to have a busy life to develop your Will.

Whatever you routinely do, that shall be your practice.

Your Will practice could be as simple as brushing your teeth or vacuuming your apartment.

How can that be a Will practice?

By consciously deciding to do it and executing it with awareness.

Let’s consider a typical, mundane scenario: vacuuming your apartment.

Perhaps before starting, you feel compelled to do it because the place is already quite dirty, and you dislike living in such conditions. Notice how pain is forcing you to act. It’s not a conscious decision but an impulse to avoid the discomfort of a messy home.

Or maybe it’s Saturday morning, and vacuuming is just part of your routine. So it’s an automatic mindless action you do while listening to a podcast.

Or perhaps your partner asked you to do it, and to avoid conflict, you comply. Once again, it’s pain and discomfort pushing you into action.

None of these actions are truly willed or consciously decided. They’re driven by internal impulses, conflict, and mindless habits.

But… could it be any different? Certainly, you still need to do it or at the very least hire someone to do it – but, for the sake of example, let’s assume you can’t and it must be you.

Instead, notice that impulse in your body, notice how it’s forcing your action. And notice the internal conflict among different parts of yourself. Can you become aware of the internal representation of those different aspects of yourself? How are they manifested in your body and energy?

Only when you truly acknowledge them, when you can feel fully the different impulses – become aware – and let them take their course, then can they be finally integrated inside of you and you can take a conscious, decisive, and willful action free of their emotional charge.

Otherwise, you will simply be driven by a painful impulse, a mindless habit, or a desire.

The main challenge is avoiding turning this into a mental debate or rationalization. There’s no benefit in deluding yourself. That’s why it’s crucial to connect all of this with your body and energy. Otherwise, it’s too easy to deceive yourself.

Consciously decide or perish

Whatever you decide to do, really commit to it. Treat each action as if it’s your last. As if it’s the most important thing you could be doing at that moment.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re washing the dishes, tidying the backyard, playing with your children, or doing the most boring and mundane task imaginable. The key is actively choosing and embracing whatever you’re engaged in.

This makes you responsible for what you do. It’s about taking ownership instead of pointing fingers at the government, society, or your neighbor.

Even if you choose not to decide, even if you postpone, it’s still a decision. You’re still deciding whether or not to act, so make it a conscious decision.

You might wonder, “What about actions I’m compelled to take? I want to do something else, but I’m forced into X.”

That’s true, but it’s still a choice.

Even if it’s a choice between taking a certain action or dying, it’s still a choice. And within that choice lies your freedom.

Remember, you’re in control of your actions and behaviors. If you don’t feel this way, something’s wrong.

Perhaps you’re giving your power away to external forces—individuals, groups, or circumstances.

Maybe you are giving your power away to internal impulses – and then your actions stop being a choice but they become something you HAVE to do. Addiction isn’t a conscious decision; it’s something you feel compelled to do. It’s not a choice; it’s a blind impulse driving your actions.

Discovering your will is discovering your freedom. It’s not about doing whatever you want whenever you want, but consciously choosing your actions despite the numerous impulses and temptations you face.

Feeling is the secret

Here’s an interesting quote by Neville Goddard:

“The mechanism of creation is hidden in the very depth of the subconscious, the female aspect or womb of creation. The subconscious transcends reason and is independent of induction.

It contemplates a feeling as a fact existing within itself and on this assumption proceeds to give expression to it. The creative process begins with an idea and its cycle runs its course as a feeling and ends in a volition to act. Ideas are impressed on the subconscious through the medium of feeling. No idea can be impressed on the subconscious until it is felt, but once felt-be it good, bad or indifferent-it must be expressed.

Feeling is the one and only medium through which ideas are conveyed to the subconscious.

Therefore, the man who does not control his feeling may easily impress the subconscious with undesirable states.

By control of feeling is not meant restraint or suppression of your feeling, but rather the disciplining of self to imagine and entertain only such feeling as contributes to your happiness. Control of your feeling is all important to a full and happy life. Never entertain an undesirable feeling nor think sympathetically about wrong in any shape or form. Do not dwell on the imperfection of yourself or others. To do so is to impress the subconscious with these limitations. What you do not want done unto you, do not feel that it is done unto you or another. This is the whole law of a full and happy life. Everything else is commentary.”
