Thought atmosphere

Here’s an interesting quote by New Thought author Edward Walker:

“Every person has a thought atmosphere, depending upon the general character of his thoughts. And every place, house, room, office, or workshop has its own distinctive mental atmosphere. arising from the general character of the thoughts of the persons occupying it.

Proof of this statement is not necessary to persons who have been out in the world of men and women, and who have learned to distinguish that subtle mental emanation surrounding people and producing its effect upon those with whom it comes in contact.

This experience has come to nearly every person who may read these words.

Who has not felt that strange, unexplainable, but distinct impression regarding strange people the moment they have entered one’s presence?

Who has not felt that peculiar sensation of like or dislike; confidence or distrust; attention or aversion; arising from the mere presence of certain people who may not even be known to one?

These things do not arise from mere fancy, but are the result of perfectly natural laws that are understood by those who have made a scientific study of the subject.

There are certain public speakers, preachers, orators, statesmen, and others accustomed to addressing large numbers of people, who diffuse a thought influence over their hearers merely by standing in their midst and attracting their attention.

Some men seem to claim recognition as born leaders by reason of that strange thought influence emanating from them, even before they have uttered a word. Others, perhaps equally brilliant intellectually, fail to produce this effect — there seems to be something lacking in them.

There are physicians whose mere entry into the room imparts a feeling of confidence and trust in the mind of the patient and his family, and which changes the entire atmosphere of the room. Other physicians possessing equal knowledge, experience and ability, fail to produce this effect.

Some salesmen induce a feeling of good fellowship the moment they come into one’s presence; while others arouse but a feeling of indifference, or even actual repulsion.

Some actors need but to appear before an audience, and even before the first words of the lines are uttered something goes out from the man to the crowd that is actually felt as a living force, while other actors produce only a lack of interest, and ofttimes a feeling of being bored.

But why multiply these instances of the manifestations of mental atmosphere?

Everyone who has noticed anything about the characteristics of people must have had his or her attention directed to this matter by actual experience, many times. It is a matter of such common experience that the idea has but to be mentioned in order to be recognized and admitted.”

The end game of charisma

We all have an ideal self, someone we’d rather be instead of who we currently are. Maybe it’s becoming more magnetic, confident, or attractive, among other things.

But there are reasons why we want to become like that. perhaps to avoid the pain of being who we are or the anticipation of future pleasures and delights (or both).

The reasons behind it can vary.

However, it’s crucial to be mindful of what we project onto our ideal self because that image often reflects the unconscious desires and instincts of our lower self, rather than our true higher self.

For instance, the desire for fame often mirrors what we see on TV and social media—the glamorous lives of the rich and famous. Likewise, the pursuit of wealth might stem from similar motives, or simply the desire to avoid tasks we despise.

But the true question is: what do you want to become after you get everything that your lower self desires? If you now finally achieve all the money, fame, time, food, sex, territory, etc… what would you truly like to become and do?

Sure, we all desire money, sex, fame… It’s undeniably better to feel depressed in a 5-star hotel while eating caviar than in a 30-floor apartment building while munching on frozen pizza with a neighbor’s kid screaming nearby. No argument there.

However, these are merely the superficial desires of our lower self. While a certain level of comfort is necessary, what happens when we fulfill all those desires? That’s the real question. What do we genuinely want to become then?

Many wealthy individuals find themselves in crisis at this stage. They realize they need to discover their true selves because true happiness and purpose aren’t found by merely gratifying the desires of our lower self. These desires may keep us occupied for a while — perhaps our entire lives — as we chase what we mistakenly believe to be the ultimate goal.

Yet, there’s something higher than that. And you can achieve it right now, at this very moment: your true higher self, the one connected to your purpose and the universal Will.

And fortunately for all of us, this doesn’t depend on how rich and famous you are. But instead, it depends on genuine self-knowledge and awareness, understanding who and what you are.

That’s the end game of charisma. Even though you may get the tools you need to achieve the goals of your lower self, the end goal is much broader than that.

Getting rid of the pain

When you’re in pain, the quickest and easiest route is to eliminate it as soon as possible.

What you’re trying to resist, what you’re attempting not to feel, is weakening you.

You are wasting energy trying NOT to feel. Naturally, no one wants to experience something unpleasant.

If you touch a burning kettle with your hand, the initial reaction is always to remove it. You don’t even need to think or decide; it’s an automatic response.

Similarly, you’ve developed many of these automatic responses to other emotional pains in your life. Perhaps it wasn’t a burning kettle, but rather related to your parents, siblings, or early relationships, and so forth.

Eventually, you found a way to react and distance yourself from the pain. However, while this method protected you, it likely wasn’t the best approach. Especially if you now live as if you’re constantly pulling your hand away from the fire. In other words, you’re living as if you’re under constant attack, thus keeping your defense mechanisms always active.

This is quite exhausting. You’re spending energy defending and resisting what you don’t want to feel, leaving you with less energy for other important aspects of your life—perhaps people or situations you’d prefer to invest your energy in.

Yet, your energy is being drained by old defense mechanisms that no longer serve a purpose.

That’s why you need to dismantle them. You must allow yourself to feel whatever you’re feeling to regain energy. Yes, you might have to experience the metaphorical burn so you notice that it won’t burn as badly as you remember.

The defense mechanisms need to recognize that they’re no longer necessary. Once this is realized, more energy will become available to you.
